The Limoncello

Between history and legend.

The history of limoncello goes back to ancient times and has been lost over the centuries. It is presumed to have begun in Roman times, in Pompeii, as a rediscovered fresco there suggests. Another tradition places it in convents: the first recipe is said to have been kept within the walls of certain monasteries, where monks used fruit from the garden to make liqueur and medicine. It was so noble that it appeared on special occasions, such as weddings and religious holidays.

Other stories credit peasant families, who made it for the household with their abundant fruit, and fishermen, who drank it during long cold nights. And some say Zeus visited the land of the sirens to share the secret of limoncello.

One thing is certain: it is the fruit of love for the land, of wisdom, and of the ancestral experience of the Italian people.
